Edd Packaging Design report

Creative Communication Design
Jubilee Eggs Packaging Report
(Chicken farm)

For my Creative Communication Project I have chosen to create egg packaging design. The reason why I decided to work with this project is- because this direction of design is not developed as much as others and making a new egg packaging design could push this industry forward.
The name of my brand is ‘’Chicken Farm’’. The product I made aimed at people 20-45 year olds. Mainly people who like trying different ways of cooking, to experiment. It could be a nice present for Mother’s or Father’s Day. Also for people who never tried other kinds of eggs, but chicken. My product will be sold in special gift shops only. The way I created my packaging makes it unusual, creative and different to the packaging which we can see in supermarkets. That’s why, I think, it shouldn’t be located on same shelf with other supermarket’s products. ‘’Chicken farm’’ product comes with 6 eggs inside: 3 chicken eggs (which are in different colours), 2 quail eggs (small ones), Pheasant egg (garden birds). I placed these all eggs in one box to give people chance to try different kinds of eggs without buying them in large amount. For example, it is not necessary to buy 10-15 pack of Pheasant eggs to try them, but what if you will not like them? That’s why my six egg pack is quite convenient for people who would like to try different varieties of eggs, when cooking and if they liked it- they can go in supermarket and buy full pack of Pheasant eggs or quail eggs
Before I started designing my packaging I visited different supermarkets to see what packaging exists around us and what people consume daily. I think, eggs are the product which people need almost everyday and usually people do not pay a lot attention to its design. All egg packaging designs are quite simple and similar against each other: mainly these are square boxes with six, ten, fifteen or thirty eggs with sticker on top, saying the name of the company, which produced these eggs, class of eggs(e.g. A), ingredients.
During my research in supermarkets, in internet, looking in book sources, visiting Bankfield museum, I found a lot of interesting packaging examples. Especially I liked Japanese egg packaging and the way they wrap eggs.
Few words about modern egg packaging design, I think, they are going in same direction with what I produced, because we will not be able to see these products in supermarkets as well. As far as I confirm, these designer’s eggs are for sale in special gift shops as well same as mine.
The way I made my egg packaging design- makes it look like Japanese building. During past two years of my study I did a lot of research in Japanese packaging design and it is very unusual and beautiful for me. That’s why I wanted to create something in that style. First of all I set a point for myself to make my box design without using any glue. So, one side of the box will hold another side and so on, making together a square box. It was difficult enough for me to come up with idea how to connect all parts of my box without using any glue, stickers or paper clips. Suddenly, I looked at my puzzle box, which was lying under my table and I thought: what if I will make my egg packaging design as 3D puzzle. It was a very good idea. So, I started embodying my theory. I started drawing my packaging with a pen and paper, when it was ready- I opened Adobe Illustrator and draw my packaging in there based on sketches, which I draw by hand First of all I draw one part of my packaging using appropriate measurements to make sure that I will be able to fit eggs inside, the others three sides had to be same as a first one to make together a rectangular box. Another two sides of my rectangular box I calculated from the height of my box- these two parts were square. So, at that point I got four rectangular pieces and two square ones. The second problem I had to deal with was: how to stick these parts together and I came up with making some slots to lock one side of the packaging with another one. To realise this idea I used laser cutting machine, which was able to cut these slots. After cutting my first packaging design I made lots and lots developments. I had to cut dozens of packaging, spent weeks before I achieved result, which I was pleased with. The thing is, in the beginning of my design process- slots were too big and wide, so the box was unsteady. I came up with proper measurements for this particular case. I made the width of the slots same as depth of my box and it worked. So, after dozens and dozens of tests I finally produced my proper rectangular box.
When the box was ready I started creating graphics to apply on my box. First design wasn’t really successful. It didn’t match with a box. After feedback from the tutor and group critic, I started working in completely different direction to make sure that graphics will be able to reflect the box style. After long development I presented my new design, which was successful. It was a piece of work made from geometric figures with a geometric drawing inside. Also I created my own font from geometric figures. General feature of my design is: all graphics and the box design made from geometric figures. Also, this is the main point, which making graphics and packaging work together.
To make sure that I chose the right target audience I showed my work to 3 different people, one of them- girl 20 year old (she is full time working); second was security guy 35 year old; and last one was my manager 44 year old. The first person said, that she like the way box reassembling. It is like a puzzle: you can have a play with it. Second one said that when eggs will finish- he would definitely keep the box and would place it on the shelf. The last person said that he didn’t see anything like this before and he would buy it because of interesting shape of the box.
I learnt a lot during the process of design my packaging; first of all I developed my skills using Adobe Illustrator. This was my target which I set for myself in the beginning of this academic year. Second – I started feeling how graphics should communicate with packaging design. This project gave me a lot impression and new skills.

Final piece of design

Final piece of design, which I think looks very unusual and iteresting. Graphics an packaging communicate very well. There is not a lot going on the box. I think this design is worthy to be sold in gift shops

Feedback on Logos and Graphics

Yesterday I showed my work to the tutor. He told me that or this particular packaging design I need to come up with different graphics. Graphics should reflect packaging. So, I decided to create my graphics with geometric figures. My packaging is square- that's why it is a good idea to use geometric figures to make a nice graphics

Graphics Development

During the weekend I came up with a new graphics which I e-mailed to my tutor. Graphics were made from geometric figures and looked much better, than my previous design, tutor gave me positiv feedback, but I felt it is not there yet:
